Fika Coffee House

The original Fika, in Old Town Parker's 1906 Rhode Island Hotel building, built entirely around the Swedish idea of slowing down over coffee. Owned by Parker's mayor and his Swedish wife, and it shows in every detail.
Why it's here
Fika takes its name from the Swedish custom of the same name, which is less grab-a-coffee and more sit, talk, and let the coffee be the excuse. This Mainstreet shop is the original, opened in 2008 when Joshua and Anna Rivero bought an existing cafe called Twenty Mile Coffee and reinvented it. Anna is Swedish, which is the authentic root of the theme rather than a borrowed aesthetic, and Joshua is now the Mayor of Parker. Few coffee shops are this genuinely woven into their town.
The building is half the experience. Fika occupies the historic Rhode Island Hotel, built in 1906, in Old Town Parker's historic district. The space is rustic and wood-paneled, full of vintage and eclectic furniture, with local art on the walls and a community acoustic guitar sitting out for anyone who wants to play a few bars. There is a separate room set up for families with kids, which makes it far more forgiving than most cafes for a morning out with little ones.
The coffee is organic, fair-trade Kaladi Coffee, a Denver-area roaster, backed by a deep bench of organic teas from Two Leaves Tea Company and a long list of Torani Italian sodas. Fresh, locally made pastries round it out, and the cinnamon rolls earn specific praise from regulars. The whole place is built to discourage rushing, so it rewards an unhurried morning far more than a grab-and-go.
The honest trade-off is that this is the busier and more crowded of the two Parker Fikas, being the flagship right on Old Town's main drag. Parking is the usual Old Town mix of street and shared lots, and it gets tight on weekends and during downtown events. If you specifically want quiet and focus, the Idyllwilde location is the calmer sibling. But for the full character of the original, with the history and the people-watching, this is the one.
Know before you go
- •The Swedish fika ritual of lingering over coffee
- •Kaladi coffee, organic teas, and Torani Italian sodas
- •A historic 1906 building full of local art and character
- •A family-friendly room for mornings out with kids
Opens early and stays open into the evening daily. As the flagship on Old Town's main drag it is the busier of the two Parker locations, so weekend mornings and downtown event days are crowded.
Come when you actually have time to sit; the place is designed to slow you down. For a quieter, more focused visit, head to the Idyllwilde location instead.
The busiest Fika, and Old Town parking can be tight, especially during downtown events. Not the spot for a quick in-and-out.
Street and shared downtown parking in Old Town Parker at 19559 Mainstreet. Tight on weekends and during downtown events.
