The take

One of the best hikes in the county: a forested climb to a flat-topped, rock-rimmed mesa with Pikes Peak views. About 5.5 miles round trip, and the climb is honest work.

Why it's here

Spruce Mountain Open Space near Larkspur is a Douglas County standout, and it is the rare local trail that climbs to a true flat-topped mesa with a loop around the rim. The standard hike is about 5.5 miles round trip from the Spruce Mountain Road lot, up to and around the Upper Loop and back, climbing roughly 600 feet, a commonly cited figure the county itself does not publish. Much of the ascent is shaded by ponderosa pine and Douglas fir, which is a genuine luxury on a Front Range climb.

The mesa top is the payoff. The rim loop opens to named viewpoints like Windy Point and the Greenland Overlook, with Pikes Peak on the horizon on a clear day, and the flat-topped geology makes the experience distinct from the usual foothills out-and-back. The county itself calls the climb to the upper loop hard and so worth the effort, which is an honest summary. The trail also functions as a wildlife corridor linking Pike National Forest, Greenland Open Space, and Greenland Ranch.

The honest caveats: at 5.5 miles with a real climb, this is a half-day outing, not a quick stroll, and the upper service road is steep and often rutted. The mesa rim is exposed (one viewpoint is literally named Windy Point), so plan for wind and sun up top. It is popular and busy, especially on weekends, and the trailhead lot takes cars and light trucks only, with no trailer parking, since trailers use the Spruce Meadows trailhead. There is no water at the trailhead; the nearest spigot is at the Greenland Open Space trailhead.

Dogs are welcome on leash, and bikers and, via Spruce Meadows, horses share the trail. For a forested climb to a genuinely special summit with big views, Spruce Mountain is one of the best days out in Douglas County. Bring water, plan for half a day, and earn the mesa.
