The take

The short, steep climb to the base of the namesake butte that gives Castle Rock its name, beneath the iconic lighted star. About 1.4 miles with a real kick at the top.

Why it's here

Rock Park is the trail to the base of The Rock, the castle-shaped butte that gives Castle Rock its name and anchors its skyline. The loop runs about 1.4 miles, with sources clustering between 1.3 and 1.5, and climbs roughly 370 feet from around 6,220 to 6,590 feet. The Town of Castle Rock rates it difficult, which is fair: it is short, but the final approach to the rock is genuinely steep. The payoff at the top is a panorama of downtown Castle Rock, the I-25 corridor, Pikes Peak, and the Front Range.

One thing to get right: the trail climbs to the base of The Rock, not to the star itself. That star is a Castle Rock institution, a 45-foot electric star first built in 1936 to draw Depression-era travelers off the highway, still maintained by Castle Rock Fire and Rescue, and lit every year from the week before Thanksgiving through the National Western Stock Show in January as part of the town's Starlighting tradition. You hike to the landmark and the views; you do not climb the star.

The honest caveats: the final stretch is steep, the Town explicitly warns of falling rocks and uneven terrain, and rattlesnakes can be present, so stay on the path. The Front Street trailhead lot is small and fills on weekends, but there is overflow at Castle North Park and on-street parking on Canyon and Sunset drives. Bikes are not allowed; leashed dogs are.

It is the quintessential Castle Rock hike, short enough for an after-work outing, steep enough to feel like one, and tied to the landmark and the star the whole town rallies around. Go early on a weekend for parking, and take the steep part slow.
