Sandstone Ranch Open Space

About 12 miles of rolling multi-use trail on a historic working ranch between Larkspur and Perry Park, with sandstone outcrops and a ranch overlook. Leashed dogs welcome, big and quiet, one of the county's best.
Why it's here
Sandstone Ranch Open Space, on Perry Park Road between Larkspur and Perry Park, is one of Douglas County's larger and more rewarding trail properties and it still flies under the radar relative to Castlewood Canyon or Ridgeline. The eastern portion holds roughly 12 miles of trail, anchored by a couple of major loops: a Sandstone Meadow Trail loop in the 3.7-mile range round trip with an option to add the Ranch Overlook, and a Juniper Valley loop around 3.5 miles, plus shorter loops. The terrain is rolling rather than steep, an easy-to-moderate effort across a historic working-ranch landscape with real sandstone outcrops and juniper-and-meadow ecosystems.
The Ranch Overlook is the payoff to aim for: a viewpoint over the historic ranch and the Front Range that justifies the extra mileage off the meadow loop. The county also runs a guided Sandstone Ranch history hike program, which is a good way to get the ranching backstory if you like context with your miles. It is genuinely multi-use: hikers, cyclists, equestrians, and in winter cross-country skiers and snowshoers all use it, and there is enough trail mileage that it absorbs that mix without feeling crowded.
Leashed dogs are allowed, which combined with the mileage and the rolling, non-brutal grade makes it a strong choice for a longer dog hike where you still want to cover real distance. Hours follow the Douglas County pattern of about one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset.
The honest caveats are minor. Exact elevation gain is not published by the county and we will not estimate a precise figure; expect rolling terrain with no single big climb. The Douglas County Sandstone Ranch page would not load for live verification of every stat, so confirm specific loop distances and any seasonal closures on the official page before a long planned route. Free, big, scenic, and quiet; this is one of the county's best and most overlooked.
Know before you go
- •A longer rolling hike (multiple loops, about 12 miles of trail)
- •The Ranch Overlook viewpoint over historic ranch land
- •A leashed-dog hike with real distance and gentle grade
- •Multi-use: biking, riding, winter skiing and snowshoeing
About one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset, year-round. Winter brings cross-country skiing and snowshoeing; summer mornings beat the heat on the exposed sections.
Add the Ranch Overlook off the Sandstone Meadow loop for the best view payoff. Check the Douglas County guided history-hike schedule if you want the ranching backstory. Confirm exact loop distances on the county page before a long planned route.
Rolling and exposed in places; carry water. Exact elevation gain is not officially published. Multi-use, so expect to share with bikes and horses. Verify stats on the Douglas County Sandstone Ranch page.
