The take

Two things in one Douglas County property: a leashed 1.6-mile prairie loop and a separate, fully fenced 17-acre off-leash dog park. One of the county's flagship places to run a dog, with caprock views.

Why it's here

Glendale Farm Open Space, near Castle Pines just off I-25, is run by Douglas County's Division of Open Space and Natural Resources, and the key to using it well is understanding that the rules change depending on where you are standing. The Glendale Farm Trail itself is a roughly 1.6-mile prairie loop where dogs must be leashed. Adjacent to it is a separate, fully fenced off-leash dog park of about 17 acres. People conflate the two and then either over-restrict their dog on the off-leash side or break the leash rule on the trail. Know which one you are in.

The off-leash area is the real draw and it is genuinely large. Seventeen fenced acres is far more running room than a typical municipal dog park, with a small agility setup, benches, open prairie, and Front Range views off the caprock. It is one of Douglas County's flagship off-leash spaces and the visitor numbers reflect that; this is a busy, well-loved property, not a hidden gem, and weekend mornings are social.

A few honest gaps. We could not verify on-site potable water or restrooms from the county's official material, so plan to bring water for both you and the dog rather than counting on a spigot. Total open-space acreage and exact posted hours are likewise best confirmed on the Douglas County Glendale Farm page before you go; county open spaces generally run roughly one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset, but verify rather than assume.

The combination is what makes this worth the drive: a real leashed trail walk and a big fenced sprint area on the same historic-farm property, right off the interstate, free. Bring your own water, keep the leash rule straight in your head, and it is one of the best dog mornings in the county.

Pro tip

Keep the rule straight: leashed on the 1.6-mile Glendale Farm Trail, off-leash only inside the fenced dog park. Bring your own water for you and the dog; on-site water is not confirmed.

Skip / heads up

This is a high-traffic, well-known property, not quiet. Restrooms and potable water are not confirmed from official sources. Exact hours and total acreage should be verified on the county page rather than assumed.
